Even though different people see art or collect it for different reasons, I think it’s a bad idea to use it as a requirement or stepping stone to get ahead in life. Art is available to everyone because of museums, galleries, Artspace, and other places.
But now that the Chinese are getting richer, they are raising their social standard of living. Social growth can be seen in a person’s stronger motivations, higher personal standards, and desire to be respected by others. Since people are getting richer, it makes sense for them to want more sophisticated and expensive hobbies.

Why do you think China needs a school to teach people how to behave?
Sara Jane Ho: The Chinese have only just started to travel abroad… Citizen-to-citizen attraction between Chinese and foreigners has exploded in the last five years. I have a lot of friends from other countries, and they always complain about how hard it is to deal with Chinese people in their own countries. I hear the same thing in Hong Kong. I’m Chinese, and I’m very proud of my country, so I decided to do something about this. With what I’ve learned [at Harvard Business School and at the finishing school Institut Villa Pierrefeu], I feel like I’m in a good place. My father builds hospitals in China and then gives them to the local government. He taught me that giving back to society is very important. I told my father that I wanted to go to China and change things there. He told them to do it.
What role does Institute Sarita play, and who are your clients?
Etiquette is on everyone’s mind. China is involved with other countries in every way, and these relationships will only get more complicated. Institute Sarita not only trains people, but also trains people who are in charge of business and social circles in China. A lot of change comes from the top. My clients are smart, thoughtful people who see themselves as inheriting a 5,000-year-old culture and want to keep it alive for the next generation.
What does your business plan look like?
I didn’t have a plan for my business, and I’ve never written one. I took a class at Harvard called Building and Sustaining a Successful Enterprise (BSSE), where we talked about the differences between a planned strategy and an unplanned one. Because it’s hard to do market research in China, I came up with my business idea and strategy on the spot. I need to be out in the world and hear what people think. Every day, I change the way I run my business. I never thought it would get so much attention.
Have you had to try to get money for the business?
At first, my father put money into the business. I just found a local business partner who is willing to work with me in exchange for a 40% stake that will be earned over time. That’s when I finally sat down and made a plan for how my money would work.
